Back in 2004, the then Forest boss Joe Kinnear promised us 'sexy signings,' but they never arrived. Some would argue we are still waiting for them and in light of the recent departures from the club, we could certainly do with a few now.
Following our promotion to the Championship, the club has enjoyed a welcome respite from the flak it's been given over the past few years and the mood on Trentside since those jubilant scenes on the closing day of the season, has been positively upbeat.
The signing of Robert Earnshaw from the Sheep, was greeted with much approval from the fans and plenty of back slapping for the board. The £2.65m spent on Little Earn was seen as a statement of intent and led us to believe that this time we really do mean business and dare we say it, are serious about promotion again.
All the positive vibes surrounding the club are in danger of disappearing fast though. Today with the departure of Sammy Clingan to Norwich, fans are left asking what the hell is going on? He's the third influential player now to walk away from the City Ground since the season ended. Sammy has followed Commons and Agogo out of the door, apparently for a better deal. It begs the question Why are'nt we competing and trying to keep these players? Do we have a wage cap? Can we compete wage wise with the other big hitters in the division? Nigel Doughty says we can and will compete with the big guns and the money spent on Earnshaw should be testament to that, but fans are rightly concerned at the lack of transfer activity coming into the club.
The message boards have been on fire today, because Sammy was a popular guy. He was one of the few players to play consistently well over the worst period in the clubs history and one of the few who can escape the pointy finger of blame for that. He was never spectacular, but always reliable. He will take some replacing.
Whilst it's far too early to panic, the departures of the last few weeks have raised a few eyebrows and raised concerns of the fans. In fairness to the club, the transfer window doesn't open until the 1st of July, so there's precious little they can do until then. The voices of discontent will grow louder if adequate replacements are not brought in, let's hope the club takes note. It is early days still and with a fortnight to go before the window opens there's still time for those sexy signings to arrive. Don't let us down again Forest. Please.
