Kelly To Make Rovers Return?

The Daily Mirror is today reporting that Forest Assistant Manager David Kelly will be the man who becomes the new manager at League 1 Tranmere Rovers.

Rovers sacked John Barnes and his number two, Jason McAteer on Friday. The pair only took over at the Prenton Park club in June of this year and found life difficult in the lower leagues of the game. Tranmere currently lie in the relegation zone, 3rd from bottom with 7 points from their first 11 games.

Losing Kelly would not only be a blow for Forest, but also to manager Billy Davies. Kelly has been BD's right hand man since their time together at Preston and followed him to the Sheepdip and here at the City Ground as well. So what are the chances of him leaving?

Hopefully, not alot. Davies and Kelly have formed a formidable partnership and together took a relegaion threatened Derby side to the Prem. They also made the Playoffs together at Preston and look to be performing miracles on Trentside. Whilst you can't blame the guy for having ambition and maybe wanting to go it alone, you hope that the promise he sees at Forest and the progress that's being made, will be enough to keep him at the club.

Tranmere are a club in turmoil at the moment and have little money to invest. Their Chairman Peter Johnson, dispensed with the services of fans favourite Ronnie Moore at the end of last season, after he took them to the verge of the Playoffs. Most of their better players have been sold and a season of struggle looms.

I hope there's no mileage in the story, but Kelly does have connections with the club. He made 88 appearances for Rovers, in a 3 year stint and is fondly remembered at Prenton Park. You can see the temptation for him, but hopefully he sees a better future for himself on Trentside.
