Billy The Liar Is Telling Porkies Again

Earlier in the season, Reds' boss Billy Davies said for us not to believe everything he said to the media, so his latest comments in today's NEP might prove to be a perfect example.

Davies says. 'We are still in the process of talking to our staff, of identifying targets and seeing who is available. We are doing that as a matter of urgency.'

Some would argue, it's gone beyond a matter of urgency and bordering on desperation. The need for a recognised left back, was one of the first problem areas the manager identified when he took over at the club 14 months ago. Most fans have recognised that need for over 2 seasons. So for Billy Davies to say he's sitting down and drawing up a list now, is stretching it a bit. He knows his targets and he's known them for some time.

The club are expected to announce news about the extent of the injury to club captain Paul McKenna today and if that news is as bad as feared, it will leave Davies without one of his most influential players on the pitch. The search for cover in central midfield has been ongoing since the beginning of the season, but Davies says the search is beginning now.

The only addition made to one of the smallest squads in the division since the start of this campaign, is that of George Boyd. Whilst he could prove to be an excellent signing, the team is still way short, in terms of numbers. Davies has had his list of targets for months, but still the club fail to bring them in. Naylor and Spurr, are just two names on a long list of left backs that have been on Billy's list since the summer. Others include Ward, Fox and more recently Bouma.

Billy Davies will be doing his nut at the length of time it's taking to get his targets signed up. He's already taken a couple of veiled swipes at the AP and I'd expect him to get a little more vocal if that delay continues

To be fair, I'd think that a new search was conducted on each occasion, as various players either moved or became available. Gareth Bale, on Forest's radar, got back into the Spuds side, and so became unavailable. The situation is fluid and constantly changing as other clubs hit their various form, suspension & injury crises's.
