'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Cohen Starts As Forest's Left Back

After almost two years out with a serious knee injury, which threatened his playing career, Julian Bennett isn't ready to make his Forest first team return.

Nicky Shorey is still a 'possible option', maybe, for Billy Davies although in the meantime it is Chris Cohen that will start the season at left back.

The Forest manager, as he told The Nottingham Post, is not prepared to risk Bennett and even though Cohen is a midfielder primarily Davies says that he'll play where he is asked to play: 'it is a big ask for Julian, because he has not played for 20 months.

'But we have a great player to fill this position, in the form of Chris Cohen.

'He gets paid to play for Forest and he will be playing at left-back. He is what we have got. He is what we have available to us.

'He has played at left-back during our pre-season games and he will continue to do so. Unless things change, whether Chris likes it or not, he will have to play in that position and do a good job for us, as he is capable of doing.'

It might seem as though Davies is being quite 'forceful' in his assessment of things and what Cohen will do although he also stressed that Cohen understands the situation and is happy to oblige, at least until a new left back can come in, if this happens...

Bennett is also set to be loaned out until January, and his 'position as a Nottingham Forest player' will then be assed after this: 'I made it clear to Julian at the end of last season that the objective would be to get him out on loan until January.

'Then we will bring him back and assess his position as a Nottingham Forest player.'

Do you think that Julian Bennett is going to have a long-term future as a Forest player, and are you also happy to see Chris Cohen filling in at left back in the meantime?

The AP have known for a year that we need a left-back. Where's the ambition from them? Starting the season with one of our best midfielders out of position and one fit central defender...great start to the season! I hope there are some signings coming in the next week, though nothing's been mentioned in the last few days. Agree that Bennett needs to regain his fitness though

The Acquisition Panel has come in for some flak from some of our fellow red's fans. This is mainly down to the lack of transfer activity and also the constant public outburst from our manager to the press outlining his frustration at the lack of transfer activity, which in turn manifests its self into an image that the club isn't trying to sign players. I can't see much to complain about with regards to the AP performance. We brought a phenomenal amount of players at the start of last season (2009-2010) and remembering where we finished on the last day of the 2008-2009 season and the 3rd place finish achieved last season, then I am totally content with both the ambition and the direction that the club is heading in. There is no need to panic buy or pay over inflated prices to other football clubs in the silly season just because we have a few injury problems . if it means buying players at the end of September so that we pay one million pounds less than the clubs asking price or even waiting until the end of January, then why not? This is why we have the AP, to get quality players at the right price. I can understand everyone's frustrations and the need to be back in the top flight "like yesterday", i'm the same but let's wait and see what happens over the next 2-3 seasons.

I don't think it's that. It's just that we have a good manager in place who seems to know how to be successful with a club, and whilst he is here it must be viewed that it's potentially going to be one of the best chances we've got to get to the premiership this season. Waiting 'til January without a left back could really cost us! A couple more injuries and departures could leave us at the wrong end of the table, and of course as fans we always want to see ambition from our club. Not saying we need to pay over the top for players, but other clubs are able to add quality to their squads.
