Varney Loan Rumour Gathers Pace

Several media sources are reporting that Portsmouth striker Luke Varney is a loan target for the Reds' and that he's set to sign until the end of the season, prior to the loan window closing on Thursday.

Forest boss Steve Cotterill signed Varney from Derby at the beginning of this season when managing Portsmouth and is clearly an admirer of the former Ram, Charlton and Crewe man.

Varney (29) has scored 5 goals in 21 appearances for Pompey this season, so would be little better than what we have up front ourselves at present. Top scorers for the Reds' so far this season are Robbie Findley and Marcus Tudgay with 6 a piece. Whilst goalscoring has been a major problem for us so far, there's little to suggest that Varney will be the man to solve that problem.

If Varney can rediscover the form he had when he was at Crewe, where he made a name for himself under Dario Gradi, then he could prove to be the signing of the season. Will he sign though and would you want him?
