Cotterill Talking Of Promotion Next Season

Now that Championship survival has been guaranteed, Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cotterill is already looking forward and planning ahead for the 2012/13 campaign.

With 2 games still left to play, the Reds' boss says that if he can keep the nucleus of the current squad together, they can challenge for promotion next season.

Talking to the NEP, Cotterill said. 'I would like to have a very different target next season. I want to be looking at promotion, because I am a winner and it is tough when you are not winning. As long as we can re-sign some of these players and work with some of those we have already got, as well as adding to the mix, we can do that.'

It's not unfair to say that Cotterill still has a tough task on his hands in convincing many supporters of his ability to do the job and to also convince them that he is the long term solution to the problems the club have. When Cotterill accepted the job on October 14, Forest were 4th from bottom on 8 points and had just witnessed former England boss Steve McClaren walk out the door after a miserable 10 games in charge. On the same day as McClaren's resignation, Chairman Nigel Doughty stood down as well, following protests from supporters.

The problems Steve Cotterill has had to contend with were not of his making and we should definitely cut the guy some slack on that front. He's had no money and he's had to wheel and deal to get in the players he has. Championship survival was the remit when he took on the role and that goal has been achieved. But, is he the man to take us onto the next level? I'm not so sure of that personally, but he does perhaps deserve the chance.
