Nigel Doughty Speaks

Speaking to Local Radio, Nigel Doughty had the following to say:


With Reference To The Current League Position:


'We've hit a bit of a wobble at the moment. It happens and was gonna happen at some stage of the season. Lets hope to get back on the right track today. Mindful of what happened to Swansea last year who were top at this stage, went out and bought some players in January, form slipped and ultimately failed to win promotion to The Championship.'

Regarding Colin Calderwood:

'He's doing OK at the moment. We have a very harmonious club and a very together dressing room. It won't be for lack of effort if we fail this year. We're very optimistic and hopefully we can push on in 2007 and go up in an automatic slot.'

Regarding The Transfer Window:

'We are/were hoping to be busy in January. It's gonna be difficult to attract the sort of player we want. The sort of player we want is someone who is gonna be competitive for us in The Championship, because the momentum we have at the moment at the club and in the dressing room would give us hope to be competitive in The Championship and we've got to have the quality to add to the squad. It's easier when 7 or 8 points clear at this stage to say 'come and join Nottingham Forest, you're almost guaranteed Championship football next year'. It's an easier sell than Nottingham Forest in 2nd place. Hopefully through January our competitive position will improve. Colin Calderwood has given me his shopping list. He and I are going to see some players tomorrow for a sort of final view. Keith Burt, David Pleat and the team have certainly been putting the hours in.'

'We don't have as big a squad as we had at the beginning of the season. A lot of the players Colin thought would be uncompetitive for us, we've managed to move out. We thought we'd be buying for next season but we may have to change that approach and say that we're not gonna be able to buy or attract those sorts of players. It's not a matter of money, more a case of whether the player would actually come. We'll maybe try and get a couple of loan signings to bolster things.'

'We don't need to sell and we're not selling. Tyson to Birmingham is rubbish, so we can firmly bang that one on the head. '

I bet we wait until mid Jan until we make any major signings. Maybe by then we will have got a couple of wins and will become a more attractive proposition again. I think loan moves might be more realistic but I have no idea who would fit the bill. Maybe one of Arsenals decent youngsters?
