Carlisle 1 Forest 0

Karl Hawley grabbed a first-half winner to hand spirited Carlisle a 1-0 win and dent Nottingham Forest's promotion hopes.

Forest enjoyed plenty of possession in midfield but were unable to breach a solid United defence.

Hawley's goal arrived when the visitors appeared to have cleared a Jeff Smith free-kick only for Paul Thirlwell to loft the ball back into the area.

The unmarked Hawley nodded the ball home from six yards for his eleventh goal of the season.

Thereafter, Carlisle did not allow Forest any space and Smith almost profited on his home debut after Wes Morgan had hesitated.

Forest brought on a fresh strike force with fifteen minutes to go, Junior Agogo and Nathan Tyson replacing Dobie and Lester but it made little difference against the home rearguard in which skipper Peter Murphy and Danny Livesey excelled.
