'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Commons: Forest's Struggle In Market

Kris Commons today admitted Forest's mid-season wobble could have cost them in the transfer market.

The midfielder believes the Reds' slide from seven points clear at the top to third place hampered their chances of landing Championship-quality players.

Although David Prutton made the move from Southampton during the January transfer window, Commons believes other players were unwilling to make the step down.

And he fears boss Colin Calderwood will continue to struggle to land his transfer targets as long as Forest remain in League One.

He said: 'It's going to be hard for him trying to attract players to a League One side.

'If we get promoted it will be a lot easier.

'Nottingham Forest in the Championship will be one of the biggest clubs up there. It's one of those things where players look at the club, they've seen we've been in a bit of a wobble and it's a big gamble.

'The players that we're trying to sign are in higher leagues and good, good players. It's asking a lot for Championship players to come to League One and help us try to get promoted, which is never guaranteed.'

Calderwood is hoping to sign two players on loan to boost Forest's promotion challenge.

He was disappointed last week when failing in a £250,000 bid for Gillingham winger Matty Jarvis and must now realign his targets.

The Reds boss knows he needs to strengthen his squad after only bringing in Prutton and Luke Chambers in January.

But Commons insists that, even without additions, Forest have a strong enough squad now to see out promotion.

He said: 'With the players we've brought in now I think we're better than we were before January.'
