Warburton Targets Premier League

It's far from certain Nottingham Forest will avoid relegation from the Championship this season but Mark Warburton - brought in to ensure this - is already plotting a route to the Premier League.

Fawaz Al Hasawi installed Warburton ahead of the East Midlands derby with three points against Derby the first aim of the new Forest boss and Championship survival the short-term goal.

However, assuming survival does indeed become the case Warburton is then looking to 'steady the ship' at Forest. He would then seek a positive pre-season and some squad restructuring ahead of next season.

Warburton laid out his ambitions when talking to BBC Nottingham Sport.

'We have to get the club back to where it needs to be in the short, medium and long term. We need to stay in the division. We have to steady the ship, get the performances in and the points we require on the board then we need a solid pre-season to try to fine-tune the squad and add quality in key areas.'

Then the 'promised land' of the Premier League would be targeted, which Warburton is confident can be a realistic prospect.

'The Premier League is the promised land and that is where we have to get to. A club of this stature has to be in the Premier League. That has to be a very clear and realistic ambition.'

First things first though, Forest take on our bitter rivals Derby at the City Ground on Saturday with Warburton aware of the importance of this meeting for 'a number of reasons.'

'These are the games players must relish and understand the emotions and passion that is involved. We know exactly what it means to supporters. It is a huge game for a number of reasons.'

Adding.

'I understand the significance of this game, what it means to people in the area. It is important for the players to get the balance right. You have to go out and perform and enjoy the pressure. But they must understand what the game means to people.'

Forest hopes of staying in the Championship would be improved by a victory over Derby as not only could it increase our two point advantage on the bottom three the boost of beating our rivals may act as the catalyst to push on.

The alternative isn't something we want to think about!
