Warburton - Quality Over Quantity

Warburton - Quality Over Quantity

Ok, Mark Warburton hasn't exactly said he's looking to take the quality over quantity approach with the Nottingham Forest squad next season, but the Forest boss has made it clear the squad needs trimming.

Warburton feels 30-odd players is too many, Forest actually used 42 during the course of the season just ended, when Championship survival was secured by Sunday's win in the visit of Ipswich.

As such, when quoted by BBC Radio Nottingham, Warburton said he'll be looking to reduce numbers to work with a 'tight squad' of 21-22 players during the 2017-18 season.

Warburton said: 'We came in to 33-34 players and we are trimming. We need a tight squad. I want a squad of 21-22 players next year. A tighter squad is far more beneficial than a heavy squad.'

That amount of players, 21, were used during Warburton's eight games to see out the season, which tends to suggest those, who were available, who remained outside of his matchday squad will be among those moved on, assuming Forest can find takers?

Warburton, 54, went on to reiterate his views, shared following the Ipswich win, he's seen enough quality within the squad to suggest Forest can do well next season. He would then 'fall back' on the talented youngsters coming through the academy.

The boss added: 'I have seen enough from my time here so far to know a good pre-season and we can put a good marker down next season. There is quality. Quality experienced players and quality young players, so all credit to the academy with Gary Brazil, Jack Lester and all the staff. I have good young ones coming through I can fall back on if I have a problem.'
