Assombalonga Keen On DR Congo

Assombalonga Keen On DR Congo

Previously Britt Assombalonga turned down the chance to link up with DR Congo but the Nottingham Forest striker is still very interested in playing his international football for the Leopards.

Hampered by injuries this season, coming strong to end the campaign scoring the goals that helped kept Forest in the Championship, Assombalonga was offered the chance to play for DR Congo at the Africa Cup of Nations in January but he turned this down in order to focus on his club football.

DR Congo-born Assombalonga has made it clear he's keen to follow in the footsteps of his Dad, Fedor, who played for Congo.

Assombalonga told the BBC: 'I was born in Congo so that's where I want to play. My dad played there so it's not really difficult. People might say its the easy way but that's where I was born, that's where my family is from.'

Proud of his African background, Forest's former Watford striker Assombalonga was born in Kinshasa but brought to England by his family when he was eight years old.

He added: 'I am African and I want to show people that they can pick to go and play for a team in Africa and that's what I have done, that's what I have chosen. It's good for me because I am proud to say I am African, I am proud to say I am from Congo and that's the team I would like to play for.'

Goals have never been a problem for Assombalonga, it's his misfortune with injuries that has cost Forest his goalscoring exploits. A full pre-season schedule under his belt and he should be well placed to hit the ground running at the start of the 2017-18 campaign.

Looking back at the last day escape against Ipswich, Assombalonga, 24, said it had been a 'special' weekend but he doesn't want to see Forest in that position again.

'This weekend was special but nervy. I wouldn't call it a big achievement because you never want to be in that position. It's nice to see everyone excited because we didn't get relegated but as a player, as a coach you never want to be in that position.'
