Cohen, Yes. Mancienne, Why?

Cohen, Yes. Mancienne, Why?

Kenny Burns doesn't have a problem with Chris Cohen signing a new contract, which he deserves, but doesn't see why Michael Mancienne was handed a new two year deal?

Cohen had a new one year contract confirmed following the Championship securing win over Ipswich. This is a deal Burns said he was pleased to see him sign and one the midfielder deserved.

Burns told the Nottingham Post: I'm pleased Chris Cohen has signed a new one-year deal at Forest. He deserves it given his service to the club and what he can still do on the pitch. Given his injury record I'm always going to worry about him being able to play a large number of games.'

Having been plagued by serious injury problems in the past few years there's always going to be the worry Cohen will suffer another setback, which would finish him.

Year by year deals are the way forward with Cohen. Burns added: 'You always worry he's going to have another terrible knee injury. You would think that would be it for him if that were the case. With that in mind, I think it's right he only got one more year. You'll probably have to keep doing that for as long as he's playing.'

A decade on from his signing from Yeovil, Cohen, 30, was worth of a new deal but Burns wouldn't be dishing out deals for anyone else out-of-contract at the City Ground this summer, including Mancienne who signed a two year deal.

Why this deal for former Chelsea and England U21 defender Mancienne though?

He added: 'I'm not sure I'd give any of the other out of contract players a deal but we'll wait and see. Personally, I remain baffled that Michael Mancienne got a new contract. Let me ask this, what does he actually bring to the team?'

The European Cup winner hopes Mancienne's, 28, continued Forest career isn't going to hold back the development of Reds youngster Joe Worrall.

Burns continued: 'He doesn't win headers and I struggle to think of a player who passes it square or back as much as him. I've never seen him talk, except for when he was sat next to Cohen in the director's box. I wouldn't like to think of him playing ahead of Joe Worrall and holding his development back. You need your players to talk to communicate. I've not seen a heated discussion on the pitch this season, never mind a row.'

Ouch.

Improvement is definitely needed at Forest next season and some of those offered new deals, assuming they are, are going to have to offer a lot more next term to justify them. The again it remains to be seen if others will stay at the City Ground along with Cohen and Mancienne?
