Weir - Deportivo Saprissa Very Worthwhile

Nottingham Forest's players are enjoying the sunny climes of America for pre-season - not that the weathers not bad in the UK - but this isn't a holiday.

The squad are being worked hard in Florida and Forest took the chance to face Costa Rican side Deportivo Saprissa, who are also based IMG Academy facility, in a behind-closed doors friendly.

A game broken into three periods, Forest, having won the first thanks to a goal from Jason Cummings, losing the second to a Saprissa goal, eventually secured an overall 2-1 victory when Zach Clough scored the only goal of the third period.

Assistant manager David Weir told the Official Website he feels this was certainly a worthwhile practise and the players will gain plenty from it along with a bit of confidence.

He said: 'I think it was very worthwhile, the temperature makes it a challenge but the lads applied themselves really well. They have been working hard in training and they worked hard in the game so you can definitely see the progress. I am sure they will get a lot of confidence from having some minutes under their belt and having a touch of the ball against a good team.'

Adding: 'They are a good side and they caused us some problems, but we caused them some problems too. For a first game it was good as players got between 30 and 60 minutes under their belt and we take confidence from that. It was a challenge, a proper game, and the players had to think on their feet and were under pressure when they got on the ball. It is why we are here, to challenge the players and you can see they are working hard and you can see we are challenging them as their heart rates are up and the distances they are covering. We are really happy with the information we are getting back.'

Cummings, having joined Forest from Hibernian earlier in the summer, is in the Reds' squad in America as is recent addition Barry McKay from Rangers - both featured with Cummings of course scoring.

This period in American will also help the Scottish pair integrate into the squad with Weir happy with their progress so far and confident they'll have plenty to offer Forest in the years ahead.

Weir said: 'Coming out to Florida they get to know their teammates personally but this also gives them a chance to know them as players on the pitch. They have integrated into the group, have been accepted and they have things to learn about the way we do things. They both did really well and it was great for Jason to get a goal and Barrie showed his quality as well. They are both young players and both have a lot of development to do and can get better but they are really good players as well.'

Meanwhile, Ben Brereton is one of those missing from this tour but the England U19 international, who recently committed his future to Forest, is working hard at the European Championships.

In fact his brace in a 4-1 win over Germany at the weekend, taking his tally to three goals in the competition, saw England book a semi-final place against the Czech Republic.

Eric Lichaj has been involved in the CONCACAF Gold Cup for America and Anel Ahmedhodzic has also been playing for Sweden in the same competition as Brereton in Georgia.
