Warburton - The Madness Of The Game
Manager Mark Warburton has admitted that Nottingham Forest were poor in the victory over Sheffield United at the weekend.
Taking a two one victory as we came from behind in the game, the gaffer knew Forest had played far better this season but come away with nothing, so there was a pleasure in playing badly but taking all three points to end our current run of form.
Speaking to the Official Forest Site as he met with the media following the game, Warburton admitted the match was just proof of the madness of the game, especially the small margins that results swing on.
'We gave away a soft goal at the beginning and the players looked nervous but it was a good reaction. We played very well on Tuesday night and got nothing while today we didn't hit those heights and we took three points. But that's the madness of the game.'
Warburton felt the scoreline could've been greater in our favour as well.
'I felt we could have scored two more goals at the end of the first half. The chances for Kieran and Jason should have been converted while we could have scored a few more at the end as we broke away on the counter. Overall, the boys responded to the challenge really well today. We wanted to go into the international break on the back of a victory and all credit has to go to the players.'
The result puts Forest into the top half of the Championship table and the boss felt we were in good shape going into the international break.
'We have to learn from the mistakes we've made previously and that's the only way you can learn. Here we are talking about errors we've made, things we can improve upon and we're still in the top half. Of course we're frustrated to have dropped points previously but this is a young side that is learning all the time.'
'We needed that result today as it's important that the boys either go away on international break or go back on to the training ground and be positive about what they do. I've got tremendous belief in the whole squad and their performance on Tuesday night showed me that we could win the game today. We didn't want to make unnecessary changes to the side and, even though we didn't play as well, we're delighted to come away with the three points and take confidence into the international break.'
Jason Cummings was also speaking about how massive a result it was for us as we went into the break.
'It was a massive win for us. I was happy as well to get my goal and help the boys win and Kieran with a fantastic finish as well. We needed that win to go into that break. It is massive for our confidence and with Derby when we come back. For the fans it has given them something to cheer about as well as they have been sticking behind us for the last few games when it hasn't gone our way. To be fair, I don't think we deserved to win but in the last few games we have deserved something and we stuck in and got the result so we are delighted.'
'We know that we have firepower up top. Even when we went 1-0 down we always fancy ourselves to score; I was never uncomfortable as I know we will create chances. We did and we got a couple of goals and the defence was different class at the end to hang in there. I'm not bothered who gets the goals; I am happy but all that matters are the three points after a couple of bad results. We just wanted to get the three points and now we can have a good international break then keep going when we come back.'
