Could Forest Save A Fortune By Keeping Transfer Flop?

Could Forest Save A Fortune By Keeping Transfer Flop?

Forest great Kenny Burns is advocating that we give Jason Cummings a second chance following his impressive spell on loan at Rangers.

Speaking to the Nottingham Post, the European Cup winner says that Aitor Karanka should at least give the Scottish international some thought when he returns from his loan spell up North in June:

"If he does want to come back to the City Ground, then you hope playing in the Scottish Premiership for half a season, and scoring goals, will give him the belief he can do the business in the Championship - not that he`s ever short of confidence.

"He`s scored lots of goals for Hibs and he`s banging them in for Rangers now. It`s up to Karanka and the player himself to decide if he gets the chance to prove he can score goals for Forest."

The fact that the Spaniard was willing to offload the forward just a week after taking over the club suggests that there isn`t a way back for the player, but stranger things have happened.

There is no doubt about the 22 year old`s goalscoring ability in the Scottish Premiership, but he flattered to deceive during his brief spell at the City Ground. He was given seven starts in the Championship and managed just that one goal against Sheffield United. He was more successful in the League Cup, but it was telling that even the man that signed him, Mark Warburton had lost faith in him during the last month of his reign.

Cummings is certainly hitting the headlines with his exploits for Rangers, having scored a hat-trick in the Scottish Cup tie against Falkirk on Sunday. Still, it must be said he has so far failed to score regularly in the league, with just one goal in seven appearances. The fact that Alfredo Morelos has been keeping him out of the starting eleven for the most part kind of puts paid to the argument that he was just not given the chance with the Reds. He is simply not rated to be a regular first team performer for either club.

If the striker isn`t the answer then we will definitely have to invest in a new striker at the end of the season. We shouldn`t need to rely on the inconsistent performances of young Ben Brereton or the ageing talents of Daryl Murphy for goals. Another solution will be needed in the summer.
