'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Young Guns Runners Up.

Nottingham Forest's youngsters narrowly missed out on F.A. Premier Academy League glory when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Huddersfield on the final day of the season.

For while Forest were having to settle for a point, their rivals for the title Sunderland beat Manchester United 1-0 to clinch top spot by two points.

Had Forest edged the game in Yorkshire or Sunderland failed to beat United, the title would have come to The City Ground.

It was a heartbreaking end to an excellent season for Forest, who took an early lead when a shot by Mark Byrne was deflected in by Emile Sinclair.

Forest had several other chances to make the points safe but Huddersfield snatched a draw three minutes from time to stun the visitors.

Said Academy Director Nick Marshall: 'To say the least, it was a hugely disappointing end to what has been a magnificent season.

'It didn't work out for us on the day but I would not want the final events to cloud the many good points that have come out of the campaign.'

Team: Redmond, Liburd (Staples 89), Mitchell, Bencherif, Sharpe, Treacy, Hook, Byrne, Heath, Sinclair, Fairclough (Whitehurst 88 min). Subs not used: Newbold, Pearson, O'Brien.
