Calderwood - 'Room For Improvement'

Forest picked up their first win of the season against Port Vale on Saturday, much to the relief of the gaffer, players and fans alike.

Whilst it was too early in the campaign to panic, another winless game would have had he Calderwood bashers out in force. This victory, although not pretty could be the spark that lights Forests' fire and finally sets us on our way.

Three draws and a defeat had seen the Reds in the relegation zone before the start of play, after Leeds beat Bristol Rovers 3-0 on Friday night. The site of Forest in the bottom four could have dented the already fragile confidence of a squad searching for their first win. But it was a credit to them that they scrapped out a 2-0 win at a place that has been the catalyst for good runs in the past.

Colin Calderwood told the Nottingham Evening Post . 'We have now given ourselves something to build on.We all know there is a vast improvement to come from us yet but I saw some good signs and we can move in the right direction.'

Fans who made the trip to Vale Park have echoed those sentiments and readily concede that this was by no means a vintage performance. Forest have played better than this and lost this season, but the points will be all that matter. The victory will hopefully be the start of winning ways for the side and will be welcomed by everyone, especially the manager who has silenced his critics for a week at least. Next up for the Reds is the rearranged Carling Cup game with Gary Megson and Leicester City, with Aston Villa in the 3rd round as the prize.
