Newcastle v Forest; A Vital Preview

Newcastle United
vs.
Nottingham Forest

St James' Park

Wednesday, 23rd August, 2017.

7-45pm

Mark Warburton's Forest meet Rafa Benitez's Newcastle United on Tyneside in tonight's 2nd Round Carabao Cup clash.

Vital Quotes:

Forest Manager, Mark Warburton, gave his views on the fixture at the pre-match press conference:

'Forest have a long association with the League Cup and we will go there with a strong squad and look to win the game.

We know it is a very tough test; at a top-class venue, against a team with a magnificent Premier League pedigree and managed by a top-class manager in Rafa Benitez. We know what we face but we are in good form.

You can only field 11 players and if you have a squad of 23, 24 or 25, their job is to work hard every single day and every player has done that. Sometimes you have to be patient; sometimes you get your rewards early on and sometimes you have to wait, but you have to take your chance when it does come, by working hard and maximising the opportunity. We will use the squad and field a very strong team.'

Newcastle United Team News:

Given that he gave an interview the other day, I'm hedging my bets that Rolando Aarons could well return to the starting 11, after 12 months out injured.

Jonjo Shelvey is in the middle of his latest 3 match suspension and Dwight Gayle was apparently unwell.

Rafa has said he intends to make 'a lot' of changes to his side as they enter the competition at the 2nd round.

Player to watch: Karl Darlow

Forest's former keeper is expected to make his first start of the season, so will be keen to impress.

Nottingham Forest Team News:

New signing, Liam Bridcutt is cup tied so he will have to wait for the weekend to make his red's debut.

Matty Cash, Chris Cohen, David Vaughan and Jamie Ward are all injured, whilst Vellios, Henderson & Lam all featured in last night's u23 game - so, they will not feature.

Mark Warburton changed the entire starting 11 for the 1st round game, so it's highly likely there will be at least 8-9 changes.

Player to watch: Ben Brereton

The 18 year old academy graduate, had not started a game since the opening day win, but came off the bench to help Forest win against Boro.

He has yet to score this season, after scoring 3 when he broke into the first team - so, he'll be keen to break his duck for this season.

Match Facts & Stats

Newcastle have lost both of their opening Premier League fixtures, against Spurs & Huddersfield, without scoring a goal - conceding 3 in the process.

Forest have won 4 of their 5 games so far, scoring 10 but conceding 7 - their only defeat came against Barnsley.

Ref Watch:

Tonight's Referee is Darren England, his 5th game in charge this season - the previous 4 have yielded 15 yellows and 1 red card. Last season he officiated 42 games, awarding 121 yellows and 9 red cards.

Mr England will be assisted by Billy Smallwood and Christopher Akers, with Martin Coy as 4th official. Match Day referee England has officiated four games in 2017/18, showing 15 yellow cards and one red card.

Match Prediction:

Newcastle are overwhelming odds on favourites for a home win, which would ordinarily be hard to argue against - but, the early rounds of the League Cup sees sweeping changes to most sides.

The Toon should still be far too strong for Forest, so hard to see anything other than a home win.

Next Fixtures:

Forest face Leeds this Saturday, 26th August (5-30pm KO) as their last game before the International Break.
